Heartworm disease has been diagnosed in all fifty states, but is especially prevalent in Madisonville and the surrounding areas. Madisonville Animal Hospital follows the American Heartworm Society and their recommendations for heartworm testing for the pets in our care.
Heartworms can be found in both dogs as well as cats, and begin when an animal is bitten by a mosquito carrying heartworms. Indoor pets not on a heartworm preventative are frequently diagnosed with heartworms, as mosquitos often get in our homes through open doors and windows. Once an unprotected animal is bitten by an infected mosquito, the immature heartworms begin to mature and migrate through the body. Heartworms routinely infect the heart of dogs and cats, but can also cause permanent damage to their lungs as well. Left untreated, the mature heartworms can ultimately be fatal for dogs and cats.
Dr. McDonald can quickly and accurately determine whether your dog may have heartworm disease by performing a blood test at the clinic. The test can be performed while you wait, and we will provide the results to you while you are at our hospital.
The most important fact to remember about heartworm disease is that it is always less expense and more effective to provide your pet with heartworm preventative medications than it is to treat them after they have heartworm disease. Dr. McDonald personally selects all of the heartworm preventative products we carry, based on their safety and ability to properly protect your precious pet. While no medication is always 100% effective, the products at our hospital are extremely effectual the vast majority of the time.
